Baba Mukashi (Ceremonial Matcha for Koicha)

Babamukashi represents the third highest grade of matcha produced by the renowned tea artisan Kanbayashi Shunsho, a product steeped in a distinguished historical legacy. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the influential shogun, held a profound admiration for the tea crafted by the matriarch of the inaugural Kanbayashi generation, affectionately referring to it as Babacha, which translates to "Grandmother's tea." In honour of her exceptional expertise, he bestowed upon her a tea garden located in Wakamori. The tea cultivated from this garden was subsequently named Babamukashi. This esteemed title remains exclusively associated with the Kanbayashi family lineage.

The freshly ground matcha powder emanates a sweet, dessert-like fragrance, delicately infused with subtle notes of vanilla, thereby promising an exquisite and refined tea experience. Its flavour profile is distinctively creamy and sweet, completely devoid of any bitterness. The palate is enriched by hints of dried dates, tender green undertones, and vanilla, which harmoniously reflect the initial aromatic impression. The lingering aftertaste is reminiscent of a smooth custard cream, providing a lasting and pleasurable finish. From the first sip to the last, Babamukashi delivers a unique and unparalleled matcha experience that is both gentle and harmonious, embodying the pinnacle of ceremonial tea craftsmanship.

Kanbayashi Shunsho

Established by Kanbayashi Shunsho during the Eiroku era, Kanbayashi Shunsho Honten boasts a distinguished 450-year legacy as a renowned tea house in Uji. Since the late 14th century, when the Ashikaga Shogunate played a role in enhancing the prestige of Uji tea, the Kanbayashi family has been dedicated to producing Uji tea. Now in its 14th generation, the family continues to honor tradition while embracing innovation under the guidance of Kanbayashi Shunsho XIV, maintaining the heritage of Uji tea and contributing to the development of tea culture in Japan.
